Welcome
Wings School, Cumbria is a unique site. The origins of this school site go back as far as World War 2 and all the history that surrounded the area at that time!
We are glad to say that time has moved on and now the site is a modern purpose built school with all the facilities young people need for the 21st Century.
The school itself has modern, purposeful classrooms, including specialist teaching areas for Design Technology, Science, Art and ICT. Added to this we have an excellent sports hall facility that opened in 2008 that allows young people to experience a full range of indoor sports from Archery to Trampolining. Within this new facility there is a dedicated sports classroom and a drama studio. All of this is supported by a school library and additional IT facilities in most classrooms. Lunch is served in the “Wings Bistro,” where young people enjoy a sociable dining experience in family groups.
Wings prides itself on the results that our young people achieve at GCSE and because of this we have made a commitment to them to employ some of the best teaching specialists in the GCSE subject areas to help our young people achieve at their highest level.
The residential areas of Wings are divided according to gender and age range. This allows young people to mix appropriately with their chosen peer groups in a relaxed single sex environment. The houses for young people aged between 10-13 years are in larger groups of 14, with a mixture of single and twin rooms with shared bathing facilities. These two areas are called Swift and Swan. The remaining residential areas are semi-independence units, for young people aged between 14 – 16, again single sex, but with no more than 4 young people in each of the six bungalows. Osprey house is for 5 young people developing their semi-independence skills with a mixture of twin and single rooms, some with ensuite facilities. There are also two post 16 rooms that have ensuite facilities within the semi-independence bungalows.
This diverse mix of accommodation allows young people to develop appropriate social and independence skills, as well as mixing with the rest of the residential population through structured activities and free time, both on and off the school site. The school site has its own farm, known as Woodpecker Farm and its own Tuck Shop, known as the Duck Shop! As well as these we have recreation areas, an outdoor park, woodland area and motor bike trail that are used for activities during weekends and holiday periods. Being sited to local towns allows young people to access off site clubs such as Drama, Rugby, Street Dancing, Boxing and Cadets as well as utilising the natural environment of the nearby Lake District for Outdoor activities, such as Caving and Ghyll Scrambling.
Overall Wings has a safe village community feel, with young people feeling educated, cared for and supported to achieve the best they can be despite their sometimes difficult starting points.
We look forward to welcoming you to Wings school.
