About the school

Wings is an independent residential School for up to 59 young people, both boys and girls, who are aged 11 - 17 and have social, emotional, behavioural and associated difficulties. It is fully approved as a school by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and as a Children's Home by OFSTED. It has approval to accommodate children during both term time and holidays where necessary, so offering care for 52 weeks a year. It is situated two miles from Junction 36 of the M6 motorway in South Cumbria, with easy access to national road and rail networks.

The School has unusually high expectations for academic achievement, success in formal examinations and mainstream standards of behaviour. Most of our young people achieve at least 8 GCSEs, including an impressive percentage of A*-C grades. Young people with particular difficulties in work or relationships such as Asperger's Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and dyslexia receive special programmes directed by a Chartered Educational Psychologist.

Both OFSTED Education and Care have praised the school in their official reports, commenting on the quality of the teaching and learning, the excellent relationships between staff and young people and the high level of care and support provided.
